Dev Blog #11: Custom Fishing

Welcome to the eleventh Pactoria dev blog. Fishing just got a whole lot deeper, split into two systems that let you fish for resources and for profit.

Progression fishing

It starts simple. Craft a basic fishing rod and start fishing. After a while you'll have collected enough fish to trade in at spawn for a better rod, and each rod comes with its own loot table and its own set of resources tied to it. Keep going and you'll eventually work your way up to the lava rod, which can pull up mending books, one of the rarest items on the server.

The best part is that older rods never lose their value. Because every rod has its own loot table, there's always a reason to go back to one you unlocked earlier. Trading up through the spawn NPCs is meant to feel smooth rather than like a grind wall.

Rarity fishing

This side works differently. Craft a diamond, gold, iron or copper rod and use it in water or lava to catch one of our custom fish, ranging from common all the way up to mythical. Get lucky with a rare catch and selling it at spawn can net you serious money.

Spots

Spots are craftable items you throw into the water, and the area around them gains a special effect once placed. They're tricky to get hold of, but well worth it when you've got a group together for a proper fishing session.

Some give better luck, some have a chance to double your catch, and some speed up how fast you fish, depending on what you're after. They exist to give people a reason to fish together instead of alone.

Treasure drops

There's also a new treasure drop, the rarest catch out there. When it happens, a chest flies out of the water and lands right next to you. It's rare for a reason: each rod has its own custom treasure chest, packed with a mix of that rod's loot, which makes it one of the most rewarding pulls in the whole system.

The choice is yours

Two systems, two playstyles, and a few extra layers on top to make both more rewarding. Grind through progression fishing for resources to sell or stock your storage, or gamble on rarity fishing for a shot at a big payday. However you want to fish, Pactoria has a system for it.
